There are many reasons for visiting Malawi. It is the combination of reasons which makes such a strong case for Malawi.

It's easier to market a country with one big spectacular fact or visitor attraction. However, in reality the interaction of factors makes or breaks a good case for whether somewhere is good to visit. This is something I've wanted to write about and so I am making a start with '30 Reasons to Visit Malawi'. It may only be a list, but it is a start.

1.        It is a beautiful country
2.       Varied landscapes and lake views
3.       Compact with practical travelling distances
4.       It contains the most beautiful lake in the world
5.       It has ‘probably’ the best mountain in the world
6.       Warm and gentle people
7.       Away from the tourist crowds
8.       Fascinating history
9.       An ideal beginners introduction to Africa
10.     Spectacular tropical storms
11.     A hiker’s paradise
12.     The density of different bird species
13.     Safe to visit
14.     The ‘lost world’ of the great island in the sky
15.     More different species of freshwater fish than Europe and North America combined
16.     Inexpensive National Park entry fees
17.     Gentle walking and cycling opportunities and not just for hardcore adventurers – incl tea estates
18.     The longest rock-climb in Africa
19.     A globally unique afromontane environment on Nyika
20.     Safaris in beautiful scenery
21.     The combination of top safari, beach and hiking destinations
22.     Fantastic and ‘undiscovered’ opportunities for niche and specialist adventure sports

26.     Fascinating language and interaction with culture

Places to Stay

Liwonde

Liwonde National Park is one of Malawi's premier wildlife attractions for visitors looking to go on safari. There is something special about a River Safari on the Shire. Our blog posts will cover wildlife, places to stay and practicalities as well as interesting and illuminating stories.

Language & Culture

Chichewa is the national language of Malawi. Many visitors feel that they can get by with English as English is the official (as opposed to national) language. However, if you want to reach the heart of the people it is important to use at least some of the local language(s) or to demionstrate and appreciation of the culture. Language is an indicator of culture and we urge visitors to try some Chichewa or ChiTumbuka.
